Create a Poster using layer mask.
In this exercise I had to create a poster using a layer mask, first I looked at some images on the internet and decided on a black & white New York theme, adding colour with the yellow taxi cab. I got myself a background of a tunnel then I sourced my taxi cab image and removed it from the background with a layer mask. This allows you to work on the image with the brush tool. Setting the background to black lets you delete the areas of the image that you do not want if that you have deleted parts of the image you need to keep you can reinstate them with the brush tool with background set to white. I also used layer mask to remove parts of the Empire State Building image that I did not need. Below Image you will see is a screen shot showing the layers palette and the two layers that I have used the layer mask on.

In the image below I have changed the opacity of the taxi cab & the Empire State Building images and changed the text by adding luminosity to the text layers.
- The above image is the one in which I used the layer mask, this enabled me to delete the background on the cab image and the Empire State Building. Using the layer mask lets you delete parts of the image that you don't need, you can also tidy up your image with this by changing the paint brush background colour from black to white. In layer mask select your paintbrush tool with the background set to black you delete the selected parts of your image and with background set to white you can reinstate parts of the image.
- The layer mask is very useful tool in photoshop as it allows you to edit images and then put them into other images, while giving you the flexibility to delete or reinstate parts of your image. This could be useful in allsorts of projects such as Posters, Flyers and magazine layouts.
- I would combine the layer mask / paint brush tools with Opacity & Fill or gradient to make different looks to your work.
- This could be incorporated into your portfolio by using the technique in differing projects to show that you are competent when using it.
- My image, I think has depth and balance. The mainly black & white image is brought to life with the yellow taxi cab image & contrasting text colour.
- I don't think that anything went wrong on this task, the only thing that I would do next time is to take more care when deleting the backgrounds of images so the edges are crisper and straight.
- I don't think that I need to try things in a different way, what that I need to do is more practice with the layer mask. It has been a long time since I used this in my level 1 assignments and I have not really used it since.
The below image is for a King Kong poster that I done, this was not using the layer mask but I could have got the same result if I had used it on the King Kong image. I used the Eraser tool for this to take away the center of the image to make it look like it is behind the Empire State building image.
Once again the images used in the above poster exercise were sourced from the internet so may be subject to copyright. This is fine for educational purposes but not to be used for commercial projects.
