Photoshop Collage exercise
This is the first part of assignment 2 of my course, I have to create a collage in photoshop to reacquaint myself with it's tools. The header image above is one that I have done myself "California Dreamin". This was useful as it shows that I still have the skill to use selection tools and layers.
The above collage is based on a New York theme, and portrays all things associated with New York. I done this in Adobe Photoshop, using different selection tools. I also used Adobe illustrator for the shapes that are in the collage. The collage below is nearly the same as above one but this time I greyscaled it and used opacity at different strengths.
In all the collage's above I have used Photoshop selection tools, tools used were, Magic eraser tool, Eraser tool, Lasso tool, magnetic lasso tool. I used the move tool to move the images around, I also resized the images in the Edit mode, I moved the layers around in the layers palette and in some of the images changed the opacity so that you can see the layer below. In my main New York theme collage I also used adobe illustrator to create shapes & add colour and stroke to them.
The images in the collages were sourced from the internet and could be subject to copyright, this should be ok for this project as it is for educational purpose, This would not be the case if it was for commercial projects as you would have to get permission from the owner of the copyright. Try to download your images in the highest resolution that you can so that they do not distort/pixelate when manipulated.

- The colour New York abstract Collage is the main piece for my course work, but as you can see in the 4 images above I have used different themes and layouts for them all.
- The use of computers in art has come a long way to what we have today, we can manipulate images in all sorts of ways, that can change the whole look of anything that you want.
- The work that I have done for the Collage today can come in useful for many future work assignments such as Posters, Flyers & even in magazine layouts. this work today could also be combined with Vector artwork created in Adobe illustrator for any of the aforementioned projects. As with all of my work I always print off a copy to add to my portfolio, as this displays what that I can achieve for future work.
- The process in doing the collage makes it interesting as I have re-sized, changed colours & layered the images with shapes created & imported from illustrator.
- The image main strength I think is the use of both colour & black & white images to good effect.
- I don't think that anything actually went wrong on this project as I have been using this process in lots of other projects, so was quite competent in this.
- Looking at the finished collage the only thing that might have been a mistake was not using more colour, to many yellow tones in the design.
- Next time I could layout the design then pick different contrasting colours, and maybe take more time.
- Between now and the next session I will continue to enhance my skills in both Photoshop & illustrator, so that I can create more interesting projects.
